Headphones On…

Lately I’ve have trouble working from home and being able to concentrate. I feel like I have a case of ADD but I have a solution that worked for me, so I thought I’d blog about it and pass it on. As a lot of my readers know I work from home as I am a web and IT consultant for a few companies here in Colorado and Wyoming. When I’m not on the road, I spend 95% of my time here in my office working. My hours are long usually between 10-14 hours on a given day in the same office. Read the rest of this entry »

Finally Some Time Off!

ExpertNerd, Freelance, Health No Comments »

After three months of traveling with very few days off I finally get to be back home in Boulder, Colorado for a month! Since I’ll be back in my home office, I plan on writing a blog post at least every two days if not every day. Its hard to find time when I’m traveling and working 14-15 hour days non-stop to write a blog post, but now that I’ll be back home I should have plenty of time. Even thought I won’t be taking vacation when I’m home or anything like that, I’m going to continue working, its just the fact that I’ll be back in my own house with my own bed and not living out of a suite case or eating fast food every day. Hurray!

Freelancers: Easily Track Daily Income

Freelance, Hosting, Money, Productivity, Software, Support Desk No Comments »

Being a self-employed consultant is fairly easy when it comes to keeping track of finances. I use Quickbooks 2008 for all my invoicing, writing checks, paying bills and financial statements. However, there was one thing in Quickbooks that was not easy to do, and maybe even impossible. I wanted to see how much I was billing each day and if I was reaching my goal for the month.

I recently ran into this problem on our server. It seems to be happen after we installed Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSME) 6.0 which is the latest revision. It worked for my server at work, so hopefully this solution will be helpful.

Deny Directory Listings with .htaccess

Web Design No Comments »

Today, I’m going to write a short blog on how to deny directory listings with .htaccess. Before I learned how to use this technique, I would simply create a blank html file and post it in the directory I didn’t want visitors to see the contents of such as: includes, inc, css, images, components, etc.

Software Review: Symantec System Recovery Server

Software No Comments »

The last few days at work have been extremely challenging and my computer and data recovery skills have been put to the test. Just recently I installed the latest version of Symantec Corporate Anti-Virus (now known as Symantec Endpoint Security) on our server at work. Ever since I installed that we’ve had some serious trouble which I will go into on another blog post. Symantec is deploying a patch in the next few days, but until then I’m closely monitoring our backup system in case we need to do a complete restore. Today the software that I will be reviewing is Symantec System Recovery Server. Symantec also makes a similar product with the same technology but for desktops and laptops.

Web Host Review: HostGator.com

Hosting No Comments »

For the past eight years I’ve worked with several different hosting companies. As you may know, they are a dime a dozen out there on the Internet. At one point in my life, I even started my own hosting company Vision Web Networks, LLC. I, personally wouldn’t recommend getting into that venture. It’s very expensive, high-maintenance and technical. Choosing the right hosting company is an important step when designing a building your website. Features such as disk space, operating system (Windows or Linux), bandwidth, backup amongst others, all play an important role. In a future post I’ll discuss how to evaluate and choose the right hosting company for your website, but today’s post, I’m going to give a quick review on HostGator.com

Blogging No Comments »

Hello everyone! This is my first blog post for ExpertNerd.com. I officially launched this blog today, but I’ve been working on the coding, graphics etc. for the past two weeks. I actually registered this domain back in February of this year but finally got around to making a blog out of it. Before I started this blog I researched and experimented with several blogging platforms. I finally decided on hosting my own Wordpress blog. For my blog post today, I’m going to detail out the platforms I worked with before deciding on Wordpress. Hopefully this might help you make a platform choice for your blog.
